Cummins ISG12 Euro 5 begins Australian trial

The 12-litre heavy-duty engine is being tested ahead of a potential 2016 launch

Engine giant Cummins is trialling its new 12-litre ISG12 heavy-duty engine in Australia, with field testing beginning this month.

The compact 860kg engine could be released in Australia and New Zealand towards the end of next year Cummins says, depending on pre-production validation and the results of the current tests.

The team at Cummins South Pacific is overseeing the installation of the Euro 5 engine in four different truck models, and will test the ISG12 at a peak output of 500hp (373kW) and 1700 ft-lb (2,305 Nm) of torque.

The US-led design of the ISG12 incorporates selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and Cummins’ XPI or Extreme Pressure Injection common-rail fuel system to offer the torque and improve combustion and fuel economy.

According to Cummins, the patented technology and production techniques used in the design of the engine mean its power-to-weight ratio is best-in-class.

“Using composite materials and a sculptured block design retains structural strength while delivering a lighter, more compact engine,” Cummins says.

“The ISG also offers enhanced fuel efficiency through parasitic reducing technology without variable-flow pumps that add unnecessary cost and reduce reliability.”

“Its single cam in-head design with roller valve train and high-efficiency intake ports continues the design theme of minimum complexity and maximum efficiency.”

Testing for the engine will run for 18 months, in routes across Australia, ahead of a planned global launch in 2016.
