Truck boss backs telematics to bolster industry reputation

Taylor reckons its in-house telematics solution can help improve trucks relationships with other road users

Australia’s transport sector is a critical economic driver for the national economy, but it is also one of the most maligned – thanks to the required sharing of urban areas.

The increasing overall freight task will only add further to the potential for conflict, according to Isuzu Australia chief operating officer Phil Taylor.

Still, Taylor says the experiences of other countries could provide a solution.

“The European and North American brand of urban road congestion is well and truly upon us, here in Australia,” he says.

“Take, for instance, the vast geographic footprints of urban Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane – issues of gridlock and contested space are becoming more and more prevalent.”

Shared freight infrastructure, and improved telematics could provide the answers, Taylor says.

“We have the opportunity to learn from the experience of mega-cities around the world and have a mature discussion around concepts like shared freight infrastructure and collaboration,” he says.

For its part, Isuzu has developed an in-house telematics solution for its own trucks. Available on the 2015 N Series – to be introduced to the Australian market this year – the solution “provides a powerful tool for truck operators to increase not only operational visibility, but importantly productivity and efficiency.

“It’s a matter of applying the most intelligent solution to achieve genuine efficiencies both on our roads and on the business bottom line.”
