The German-developed dual-control models will be shipped to Australia by Daimler
Daimler Truck and Bus has announced a new Mercedes-Benz Econic for the Australian market, marking the first dual-control Econic model to arrive on local shores.
Aimed at waste collection operators, the model features an additional steering wheel and column on the left-hand side of the vehicle, a Euro 6 rated engine, increased visibility, and a low-entry cab design.
Daimler says the arrival of the new Econic is in response to a demand for dual control variants, allowing drivers to control the vehicle from the kerb-side of the cab and better see the bins during collection.
“The Econic was already a class-leading vehicle; the only thing missing was dual control,” Mercedes-Benz Trucks sales manager Andrew Assimo says.
“We are very excited to introduce a dual control version, which we think ticks all the boxes for Australian waste collection operators.”
For the drivetrain, the Econic has a six-speed Allison fully-automatic transmission connected to a 7.7-litre diesel engine, producing 299hp.
For safety, the truck has an Electronic Stability Program, an Electronic Braking System, and an Anti-Lock Braking System.
In terms of the cabin, Daimler says it complies with the European ECE-R29 crash test regulations, and features a panoramic windscreen.
The cab also features suspended driver seats on both sides, with comfort further aided by air suspension fitted on all axles.
Details on pricing or when the new variant will be available is yet to be announced.
