Towns’ truck wows Oaklands

Trucking is central to life at Oaklands, a small Riverina town which knows how to put on a great truck show

D&K Towns’ 2016 Kenworth T909 was the star of the Oaklands Truck Show on March 20.

Simon McIntosh, who drives for D&K Towns of Wonthaggi, accepted trophies for both Truck of the Show and People’s Choice.

He was proud to show off the customisation which had been carried out by his brother Luke McIntosh from Kyzer Kustom trucks of Shepparton.

About 70 trucks attended the event, including several new prime movers. Scott Willett polished up his 2016 Limited Edition Legend 950 Kenworth.

Other trucks had hundreds of thousands of kilometres on the clock, including hard-working grain trucks owned by owner-drivers and small-fleet operators from the local area. Oaklands is located in the Riverina, New South Wales.

Local trucking identity Wally Day had his name added to the Oaklands Truck Show Honour Board. Two trucks from the Days Freight Lines fleet were on display.

Oaklands Truck Show Chairperson, Frank Smith, made a spectacular entry to the truck show, parachuting down carrying a giant Australian flag.

The event began with a barbecue and live music on Saturday night, March 19, where Jimmy Beale from J&A Beale won the Lights on the Hill trophy for the lights display on his 2008 Western Star 4900. Jimmy was one of many local residents volunteering to help the show run smoothly.

The truck show holds special memories for Justin Twyford and Shane Mitchell of Dawson’s Haulage who attended with Wayne ‘Marto’ Martin. The three drivers took out Best Small Fleet Award with their sparkling Kenworths. Tragically, Wayne died in a truck accident a few days after their triumph.

Organised by the Oaklands Lions Club, the annual truck show has a family atmosphere and entertainment for all ages.
