In an industry coup, the ComVec 2016 event in Melbourne next month will feature a presentation from Mack Murray, the president of French tech firm Adgero.

On the first day of the Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (HVIA) two-day conference, Murray will be discussing his company’s energy-recovery system that can be fitted to heavy vehicle trailers.

According to HVIA, "he will be showcasing the unique world first operational energy-saving, hybrid electric system, the regenerative braking-powered UltraBoost ST, a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) able to be retrofitted to existing prime-mover trailer combinations.

"Murray will deliver an Australian first presentation on how this technology can impact the Australian heavy vehicle market, saving up to 25 per cent in fuel usage and significantly reducing emissions."

The system, which was announced in May at Britain’s Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, is the world’s first operational energy-saving, hybrid electric system for road transport.

Speaking at the time, Murray explained "because our hybrid system can be easily and economically retrofitted to existing fleets, voluntary fleet-based implementation could have an immediate and meaningful impact on fleet costs and vehicle emissions within a very short timeframe."

"Road haulage accounts for over a fifth of the EU’s total CO2 emissions, so fuel efficient solutions are crucial."

According to Adgero in May, the regenerative braking-powered UltraBoost ST "consists of an electrically driven axle mounted under the semi-trailer, powered by a bank of ultracapacitors, and controlled by intelligent management software that automatically controls regenerative braking and acceleration boost."

"The UltraBoost ST uses a compact and lightweight YASA motor to recover kinetic energy, otherwise lost as heat during braking, and stores it in high-power graphene-based ultracapacitors from European manufacturer Skeleton Technologies."

In other program updates, National Transport Commission policy manager of compliance and technology James Williams will be discussing the path for autonomous vehicles in the Australian market and how the industry can regulate, support, invest, and educate the public on the new advances.

Other noteworthy presentations include Stemco Innovative Tire and Mileage Solutions' US east national account manager of Aerodynamic Devices Cokey Ellerbe discussing the use of trailer rear drag aerodynamic devices in the US and NTC manager legislative policy – heavy vehicle compliance Anna Beesley presenting on changing CoR laws.
