The Historic Commercial Vehicle Club of Western Australia will hold its long awaited Display Day on May 2.
It’s been a long time between events for the Historical Commercial Vehicle Club (HCVC) of Western Australia. In fact, the club’s previous official show was in 2016, held in the Bunnings carpark at O’Connor near Fremantle.
For 2020, the HCVC of WA Display Day will take place in the grounds of Fennell Tyres in Kewdale on May 2. And, according to the club’s newsletter editor Kevin Toovey, it will be a fairly relaxed affair and not the type of show to attract trophy hunters.
“We’re pretty casual. We might give away a few fun things … furthest travelled, worst looking truck,” Kevin laughs.
“We’ve never been a club to promote like, ‘I’ve got the best truck in the club’ sort of thing.
“A lot of car clubs have competitions, but we just try to keep it as casual of possible.”
As well as its regular email newsletter, the HCVC of WA is promoting the Display Day by attending other motoring shows beforehand, as well as events such as the Tracmach Lights On The Hill Truck and Tractor Show at Brunswick Junction, near Bunbury, on April 18.
Kevin will be bringing his Detroit-powered ’76 Dodge prime mover along, although he admits it’s only half restored and still “in the shed”.
Committee member Morris Danks is expected to roll up with his early 1920s Chevrolet which, according to Kevin, “still goes”. Reg Blewett is certain to bring along his old Dodge which is of a slightly more recent vintage.

Kevin has been with the HCVC of WA for around seven years. In that time he says membership has jumped from 50 members to around 110.
“It’s only a small group of really active members that do the work,” he points out.
The club holds a monthly meeting at the new premises of Shannons Insurance at Cannington where club rooms at hire out free of charge to motoring clubs in Perth.
“We’ve got it booked for the second Wednesday of every month,” Kevin says. “It’s a very nice setup.”
As well as Fennell Tyres, the HCVC of WA Display Day boasts sponsorship from local truck dealerships including Kenworth, Daimler and Mack.
“It’s not going to be a big show; we’re hoping for 40 or 50 or maybe more,” Kevin says, although he says one advantage is the long gap between this year and the club’s previous show.
“We don’t have to do it to raise money; it’s more of a get-together.
“There’s no official program or anything. We’ll just all rock up at first thing in the morning, we’ll crank the barby up and spin a bit of bullshit, although there’ll be some truth told,” he smiles.
