Eyes only for Mack trucks

According to Gladstone small fleet operator Allen Genrich, there is only one brand of truck

Based in the Queensland city of Gladstone, Allen Genrich has five Macks in his fleet under the banner of Surveyor Bulk Haulage.

Allen has been involved in trucks for 35 years, 34 of them in Macks. However, he showed an interest in road transport well before then.

“When I was old enough to get my licence, I went off-siding with him,” Allen recalls of his trips with old brother Ian.

“The truck would do 85km/h when it was flat out.

“We would haul from Melbourne to anywhere in north Queensland, and from Bundy to Mackay.

“That was back in the late ’70s. There was no air-conditioning back then and just a parcel rack to sleep on.

“Ian would have the little bunk and I would sleep across the seats.

“We did two-up a fair bit and it wasn’t that bad.”

Allen’s first full-time job came in 1981 for a company called Strand, which had a port unloading contract at Gladstone’s port.

In 1984, Allen became an owner-driver. He has subbied for different companies ever since.

His pride and joy is a 1989 model Mk II Super-Liner, which he has owned for the past six years.

“I’m the only one to drive it,” he smiles. “There’s nothing better than being behind the wheel of an old Mack.”
