Great Western Highway upgrades to resume

Works at Kirkconnell are back underway today to make the key freight route safer for operators to use

Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) has announced that upgrade work is set to resume on part of the Great Western Highway.

A 2.4 kilometre section of the highway between Bathurst and Lithgow will be upgraded to make freight travel safer on the key regional route.

The Kirkconnell works includea new asphalt road surface, drainage and kerb upgrades and new signage, safety barriers and line-marking.

“Crews started work on this important safety upgrade last year and we’re pleased to now be in a position to have them return to complete the job,” a TfNSW spokesperson says.

“We appreciate the patience of motorists who have had months of a reduced 80 km/h speed limit along this section of highway but a return to 100 km/h is now just a few months away once work is completed.”

This work follows a number of safety upgrades at the same site last year including improved shoulders and lane widths, and a dedicated right-turn bay for motorists turning from the Great Western Highway into McManus Road.

Crews also carried out important tree clearing along the side of the highway to limit the prevalence of black ice during the colder months.

The work at Kirkconnell will resume today with changed traffic conditions in place including reduced speed limits, lane closures and intermittent stopping.

Work hours will be 7am to 5pm on weekdays with some night work required to complete the project. The community will be notified of this work when dates are confirmed.

Motorists are advised to slow down as they approach the work zone, follow the advice of traffic control and allow up to 10 minutes of additional travel time between Bathurst and Lithgow.

Crews expect to be finished by May, weather permitting.
