An independent test has found a hybrid diesel electric Hino used 21 percent less fuel than an equivalent diesel-only model on similar runs.
The light-duty Coles Online Hino Hybrid 616 and a Hino 616 diesel were tested on delivery runs in the Sydney area over a four-week period.
The hybrid Hino also delivered a 21 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
Coles initiated the comparison that was carried out by the New South Wales Government’s Green Trucks Partnership program.
Data from the two trucks was validated daily and any instances where the driving cycles weren’t similar were not counted in the results.
Hino Australia spokesman Alex Stewart says Hino’s hybrid trucks offer “impressive” fuel savings with no penalty in additional service costs.
“Hino’s new-generation 300 Series hybrid trucks have exactly the same regular service intervals and service times as Hino’s conventional diesel trucks,” Stewart says.
“Indeed, Hino Hybrid operators should enjoy additional savings when compared with a diesel truck because the regenerative braking of the hybrid model saves on wear to the friction brakes.
“The electrical components in the hybrid system – the motor, inverter and 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery – are maintenance-free. The battery has an eight-year warranty and is also used in the Lexus RX 450h sports utility vehicle, thereby confirming its quality and durability.”
