The New South Wales government has revealed that works to upgrade rest stops along the Hume Highway will begin this month.
Courtesy of a $1.8 million investment from the federal and NSW governments, rest stop facilities in both directions on the Hume Highway between Tarcutta and Holbrook will be improved through the upgraded Kyeamba Gap rest areas.
At the northbound rest stop, existing composting toilets will be upgraded to feature flushing toilets with disabled access and improved lighting.
At the southbound stop, which currently only offers bins, a new toilet block with disability access will be added.

At both stops, new lighting and heavy vehicle parking spaces will be installed to improve the quality of the two areas.
Works will start first on the northbound rest area this month, with the upgrades due to be done by March.
The northbound rest area will remain open during construction, with additional portable toilets installed, but the southbound rest area will be closed to all traffic when construction begins later this year.
When this happens, motorists are advised to use the next available rest areas at North Billabong for southbound drivers and South Tarcutta for northbound motorists.
“Driver fatigue is one of the top three contributors to fatal crashes on NSW roads, so these rest area upgrade investments we are making are designed to improve facilities to encourage the community to stop and rest,” NSW regional transport and roads minister Jenny Aitchison says.
