Former Johnstons Transport general manager remembered as an trucking industry stalwart
The New South Wales trucking industry has bid farewell to one of its strongest advocates, with Mike Moylan passing away today.
Moylan was the former general manager of Johnstons Transport and was heavily involved in pursuing a better deal for truck operators and drivers, particularly those hauling freight to and from NSW ports.
Road Freight NSW general manager Jodie Broadbent says Moylan was a great stalwart of the trucking industry and his presence will be sorely missed.
“His knowledge and experience in the transport industry was second to none. While people will remember Mike as a no-nonsense, determined and resolute man, they will also remember his willingness to share his knowledge, helping those who wanted to learn, and giving wherever necessary to improve our industry,” Broadbent says.
“There are many in our industry who received their start from Mike and are now leaders within their respective fields.
“On a personal note, I treasure the time I spent learning from him in his office, and admiring his famous array of elephant ornaments.
“I could not have asked for a better mentor, and I will miss him terribly.
“We will advise our members of the funeral arrangements in due course.
“Our deepest sympathies are with his wife Gail and daughter Michelle and their families at this time.”
Moylan became general manager of Johnstons Transport after it took over J Meloy Carriers in 1993, where Moylan was a director and shareholder.
“He then served as general manager for 22 years, only retiring on July 1 this year following a long illness,” Broadbent says.
“Mike was a very active member of the trucking community, and was the chair of Road Freight NSW’s Container Carrier Sub-Committee for many years.
“In 2012, Mike was awarded the Road Freight NSW (then ATA NSW) Outstanding Contribution award for his many hours of service to the industry.”
Moylan also won the 2013 National Trucking Industry Outstanding Contribution Award.
