Sales joy from the market’s lighter side

Light vans and light trucks make the running but there are hopes for heavy duty sales


The Truck Industries Council (TIC) has welcomed the slight rise in heavy duty truck sales but light vehicles make a more compelling case in a lacklustre August for manufacturers.

TIC CEO Tony McMullen highlights the underpinning light duty trucks continues to give the commercial vehicles market as a whole but holds a hope that the heavy-duty move – though down 7.63 per cent or 523 units on 2014 sales, which was in turn down 5.6 per cent or 409 over 2013 – preseaged better times ahead.

The August truck industry sales result reflects the broader economy where business confidence continues to be patchy.

"While the overall numbers for the year are up on those for the same period in 2014 the growth has come at the light-duty end of the market, reflecting where companies are prepared to spend their capital investment funds," McMullen says.

"I am however pleased to see that heavy truck sales were up, albeit only slightly, over the month of August 2014 and I hope that this is the start of a permanent turnaround in the sales trend in this segment."

TIC notes Year-to-date light duty sales are up by 10.3 per cent or 579 vehicles when compared with 2014.

There is a good story to tell in the light duty van (LDV) market with another record sales month in August.

Total sales for the month were 469 units, up 21.8 per cent or 84 units over August 2014 and eclipsed the previous best month of August, that of 2008, by 69 units.

Year-to-date the story is even better for the LDV segment with sales up 28.1 per cent or 820 vans over those of 2014.
