QLD Floods: ‘Thanks from stranded truckie’

Scott "Chubbs" Hawker called Owner//Driver today, with a touching story of country spirit during trying times

“We’ve all been stuck at Charters since Sunday or so with the floods. I’m going home the other way, but the boys are still stuck there,” Chubbs tells us.

Chubbs carts road trans for Puma Energy, running out to Mt Isa and Concurry from Townsville, and wanted to send thanks to Charters Towers locals for coming to the aid of stranded truckies.

“The locals started turning up on Monday, giving us coffee and food,” he says.

“Then Brad and Angie from Willoughbys Hay & Chaff supplies opened up their shed for food donations and fired up the BBQ.

“They were just awesome and their kids jumped on the barbie to help out!”

If it wasn’t for the community coming together, Chubbs says it would have been a pretty rough week for the stranded drivers.

“Everyone made the week a lot more enjoyable and it was just good country spirit.

“I’d like to thank the local community, from the local butcher who donated meat, the supermarket, the McDonalds.

“All of them were doing it tough as well, but they were dropping off food and helping.”

While Chubbs made it out to head home the other way, he tells us a lot of truckies are still stranded in Charters Towers.

“At the moment it’s still 3.9 metres over the Burdekin Bridge so it’ll be a while yet and the road north is shut too.”
