More than $7 billion committed to Bruce Highway upgrades

The federal government has today unveiled a massive spending spree to make the Bruce safer for truckies

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has today revealed the federal government is promising $7.2 billion funding to complete safety upgrades to Queensland’s Bruce Highway.

The funding follows recent safety issues on the road, with the funding allowing the highway to achieve a three-star safety rating.

The largest single investment ever made into the Bruce meets the Queensland government’s call for $9 billion funding between the state and federal governments to achieve a three-star rating.

Certain critical projects will be fast-tracked, such as from Maryborough to Benaraby and other areas north of Gympie, with safety barriers, wide centre lines and increased rest areas all part of the project plans.

“I’ve driven the Bruce Highway many times, and I know the critical role it plays for Queenslanders, tourists and freight,” Albanese says.

“Today’s announcement takes the total investment in the Bruce Highway to more than $17 billion. Queensland deserves a long-term plan, and that is what my government is delivering.

“We’re getting on with building a better future for all Australians.”
