Sydney-based Powertarps is aiming to lengthen the life of the DC motors that power truck tarps with its new Smart Touch solution.

With an in-built load-sensing system, the system can be controlled via a single button or remote and will automatically stop when it has reached the end of the trailer, reducing the likelihood of the motor overloading and increasing the efficiency of the process.

The company says it comes across DC motors in need of repair or replacement all too often, with replacement costs often exceeding $700 with labour.

"We anticipate clients saving in the long term with the smart switch," Powertarp owner and system designer Terry Pitsis says.

"We have demonstrated tripling the life of a typical motor with the smart switch."

Designed and built in Australia to suit local conditions, the switch can operate any motor from 12 to 36 volts and up to 100 amps. It can power two motors, such as a truck and a trailer, and is load adjustable.

The smart switch is $300 plus GST when fitted in a new installation and slightly less than the price of a new motor when added to an existing system.
