General Motors is heading back to the medium-duty market in the US after a seven-year break, with Isuzu low cab forward models to be sold through Chevrolet dealerships in 2016.

Based off the Isuzu N-series, the six Chevrolet-branded models – Chevrolet 3500, 3500HD, 4500, 4500HD, 5500 and 5500HD – will be procured from Isuzu and, according to US vice president of GM fleet and commercial sales Ed Peper, allow GM dealerships to expand their product range.

"Bringing low cab forward trucks back to our portfolio strengthens Chevrolet’s commitment to providing commercial customers with more choices and provides customers with a versatile lineup of trucks, vans and crossovers," Peper says.

"This addition helps our dealers satisfy their commercial customers’ needs all in one place."

With no other low cab forward truck in North America currently gas-powered, GM is planning on the optional addition of its 6-litre V8 gas engine in the new trucks as a point of difference.

Two Isuzu-sourced diesel powertrains will also be available with 3-litre and 5.2-litre turbo-diesel engines an option depending on the model.

The new trucks will available in regular-cab and crew-cab variants, with chassis lengths ranging from 109-inches (2.77m) to 212-inches (5.38m).

No details have been shared to indicate the collaboration would spread outside the US.
