The GasBuddy app has launched in Australia.

Following its success in North America, crowd-sourced fuel app GasBuddy has launched in Australia to Android and iOS devices this week.

The free app provides users with up-to-date information on petrol prices across the country on the back of contributions from other users.

Those with the app are encouraged to list prices they have seen, and with the help of numbers, the app displays the best locations for those running low on petrol and needing a refill.

The concept is about "saving money," vice president of international for GasBuddy Ivan Silvagni says.

"Australia has some of the most volatile fuel prices in the world, with 89 per cent of motorists thinking they pay too much at the pump," Silvagni says.

"GasBuddy has responded to this consumer frustration, first in North America and now in Australia."

Being the first country out of North America to receive the app, GasBuddy says it has been beta tested for a month in Australia.

The app also had to adjusted for term changes, such as the use of litres rather than gallons.

While the app will utilise other data sources, such as retailer price reports, GasBuddy Australia country manager Nic Moulis it is the community involvement that makes it easier for consumers to find, compare, and report fuel prices.

"Petrol prices vary greatly even within a small distance and has long been a pain point for Aussies," Moulis says.

"GasBuddy is a game changer because it takes the mystery out of fuel cost, puts the power back to the consumer and provides the information needed for motorist to avoid overpaying at the bowser."

In the US, GasBuddy reports 60 million price changes a month on the back of user incentives, a concept that has filtered to Australia.

The local arm, based in Sydney, is offering daily $100 fuel card giveaways and special offers for those who are part of the first 10,000 users.

The app is available on the iTunes Store and the Android Play store.
