Gold Coast Isuzu’s Matthew Kempnich has been crowned the top Australian Isuzu technician after winning the local leg of the Isuzu World Technical Competition.

Held last week at the Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) headquarters in Melbourne, the Australian trials saw 10 technicians compete for the chance to represent the country at the upcoming finals series.

Known as the ‘I-1 Grand Prix’, the event covers a range of tasks to sort the best from the rest, including mechanical measuring, practical assembly, electrical diagnostics, practical repair tests, vehicle inspection, and systems management diagnosis.

A theoretical exam on company-specific technical knowledge and general information rounds out the competition.

Kempnich’s win means he will head to Fujisawa, Japan to compete against the best technicians from across Isuzu’s global team.

Finishing second was last year’s winner, Ty Jenkins of Westar Truck Centre, who has also earned a trip to the finals in December.

IAL national training manager David Smith wished the two the best of luck for Japan.

"These are some of the best operators in the truck service industry and they’re all performing at the top of their game," Smith says..

"The ‘I-1’ continues to set the bar for mechanical skills challenges worldwide, and Matthew and Ty exemplify the hard work and expertise that the international community has come to expect from IAL and our broader dealer network.

"I think it’s also great for our customers to see that the technicians performing their service are world-class, so they know they’ll be extremely well looked after."

Team coach, Isuzu service manager for Victoria and Tasmania Jason Leckie, will accompany Kempnich and Jenkins to Fujisawa.
