Swedish truck maker Scania has picked up one of the most sought-after awards in trucking, with its new S series being crowned the ‘International Truck of the Year’ for 2017.

Presented as part of the 2016 IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover, Germany, the new Scania S series won the gong just ahead of the recently-launched Iveco Stralis XP-NP long-haul range and the Mercedes-Benz Actros heavy-duty truck with the latest generation OM 471 engine.

Part of the redesigned Scania truck range aimed at long-haul transport, the S series was praised by the judging panel of 25 European truck journalists for its new sleeper cab with improved visibility, in-line six-cylinder 13-litre SCR-only 500hp engine, capability to run on diverse fuels, connectivity options, and new aerodynamic design.

"The S cab, with its flat floor, offers a truly car-like driving experience," judging panel chairman Italian automotive journalist Gianenrico Griffini says on the jury’s motivation.

"With its new range, Scania has delivered a truck that represents a real ‘state-of-the-art’ offering in the heavy duty segment, capable of satisfying not only today’s but also tomorrow’s transport needs."

The first truck cabin to offer dual-side curtain airbags for safety, Scania’s president and CEO Henrik Henriksson says the new S cab is the product of 3,500 engineers working together.

"The award is the leading recognition in the industry," Henriksson says, which shows "that all our engineers and … the entire Scania organisation have done an excellent job."

"Our goal is to always meet our customers’ expectations and needs and the jury’s motivation is a clear confirmation that we have also followed the right approach with the new truck generation.

"The award shows that Sweden is still a leading industrial nation and that we can compete in the world markets."

The new range of Scania trucks was launched in August. Further details and specifications were announced earlier this month.
