British electric vehicle manufacturer Charge has announced a new autonomous-ready truck that be built by one person in four hours.

Unveiling the news at a London technology conference, Charge CEO Denis Sverdlov says the truck range, which will ship in sizes from 3.5 tonnes to 26 tonnes in 2017, is the solution to a changing logistics environment.

"We find trucks today totally unacceptable," Sverdlov says. "At Charge we are making trucks the way they should be – affordable, elegant, quiet, clean and safe.

"We are removing all the barriers to entry for electric vehicles by pricing them in line with conventional trucks, giving every fleet manager, tradesman or company, no matter how big or small, the opportunity to change the way they transport goods and make our towns and cities better places to live in."

To complete the vision, Charge says its new trucks are built with "revolutionary ultra-lightweight composite materials" and its "custom built hardware, including power electronics and motors".

This has meant it has "been able to reduce the cost of operating by more than 50 per cent."

When it comes to technology, Charge says the trucks are already ready for an autonomous-trucking future and, like a smartphone, are updated over-the-air.

Producing zero emissions over its first 100 miles (160km), the trucks’ range can be pushed out to 500 miles (800km) through the use of a ‘dual mode’ that tops up the on-board battery during operation.

For London locals, it is also ready for the EV legislation such as mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s new ‘Direct Vision Standard’ for lorries operating the city’s streets.

To be built in 2017, the factories responsible are being organised at present in the UK county of Oxfordshire.

The company believes it will be able to produce 10,000 trucks a year from just 10 staff, working two shifts per day, making it flexible for customer demand.
