Daimler Trucks unveils ‘intelligent’ truck axle

New axle reduces fuel consumption in Actros models by up to 0.5 per cent, company states

Daimler Trucks has announced a new, ‘intelligent’ truck axle that aims to result in improved fuel efficiency across the Mercedes-Benz Actros range.

The New Final Drive (NFD) rear axle is extra lightweight and reduces fuel consumption in Actros models by up to 0.5 per cent by proactively managing lubricant distribution, Daimler states.

The "actively controlled oil regulation" mechanism allows oil to be supplied as needed based on speed, torque and temperature.

"Intelligent oil management minimises the swirl of liquid in the final drive and thus reduces the friction loss from the gears turning in the oil bath," Daimler notes.

Global powertrain and manufacturing engineering trucks head Frank Reintjes says the benefits offered by the new axle demonstrate Daimler’s mastery in fuel efficiency technology.

"The second generation of the Integrated Powertrain from Daimler Trucks – consisting of engine, transmission and axle – has already resulted in fuel savings of up to 6 per cent for the Mercedes‑Benz Actros and ensures the lowest possible Total Cost of Ownership," Reintjes says.

"The world's first intelligent truck axles even enable us to reduce fuel consumption by a further 0.5 per cent.

"This once again demonstrates our technology leadership and directly pays off for our customers."

The new axle will be manufactured at the Mercedes Benz plant in Kassel (Germany) and Detroit (United States).
