Iveco, Mercedes-Benz boost in TIC sales

Iveco, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen vans were strong performers in August, according to T-Mark sales data

Volkswagen vans experienced a surge in popularity, while Iveco and Mercedes-Benz medium-duty trucks became more popular in August, according to new data from the Truck Industry Council (TIC).

The TIC’s T-Mark sales data for August 2018, which comprises all trucks complying with the Australian Design Rules sold during the month, shows that while market has cooled a little in comparison with previous months – total sales were higher than in July.

Sales were higher in the Heavy Duty division, with a total of 1,257 heavy duty trucks sold, up from 1,088 in July, with Kenworth continuing its run as the most popular heavy duty truck in Australia, with 269 sold.

Both Mack and UD Trucks did particularly well in the division during the month, recovering from uncharacteristic dips in July (Mack rising from 67 vehicles sold to 95 and UD going from 39 to 63), while a DAF sales spike took it to its highest heavy duty sale for the year – 54 trucks sold in August.

Medium Duty Truck sales rebounded in August with 721 new trucks delivered, most being Isuzus, with 281 sold in August, up from 247.

With 27 vehicles sold a-piece, Iveco and Mercedes-Benz were the standouts in the division, having risen from 16 and none sold respectively in the prior month.

Mercedes-Benz also did well in light duty vehicle sales, surpassing Iveco, Fiat and Renault to be fourth in the division with 90 sold in August, out of a total of 1,154 for the month.

Isuzu manufactured 407 of those light duty vehicles, as the fight between Hino and Fuso for second place continued – Hino winning this month with 278 vehicles sold, compared with Fuso’s 206.

Fortunes also changed in the Light Duty Van segment, with Volkswagen surpassing rivals to reach second place in August with 110 vans sold – up from the 34 sold the prior month.

However Mercedes-Benz continued its dominance of the segment, with its van sales doubling from 162 in July 2018 to 366 in August.

As Owner//Driver reported yesterday, TIC chief executive Tony McMullan says much of the slowdown in sales could be attributed to seasonal sales trends – reiterating his belief that the industry is on track for a record sales year.
