The safety of the Cunningham Highway between Warwick and Inglewood in Southern Queensland is subject to an investigation by the state’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
TMR has committed to providing safety upgrades to this stretch of the highway, however it is seeking the input of drivers and local residents as to what their most pressing safety concerns are that need addressing.
The department’s regional director Bill Lansbury says community input will assist his team to make make informed decisions.
“Community consultation is open to everyone who uses the Cunningham Highway or lives in this area,” Lansbury says.
“We would like to hear from residents, business operators and highway users to help us make informed decisions when designing safety improvements for this section of the highway.
“Your comments will help us to understand the issues you face.”
Lansbury says TMR will consult with stakeholders most likely to be affected by the design project over the coming months and then, once the detailed design process is complete and they have a solution, TMR will move into the construction phase.
The Queensland Government has allocated $16.89 million for the design and construction of these safety upgrades under the Targeted Road Safety Program.
Proposed improvements include:
- Road widening
- Removing roadside hazards
- Intersection upgrades
- Installation of double barrier line marking
Additionally, the project will result in the closure of three minor intersections: Link Road (northern leg), Meiklejohn Road (east and west), and Warrabah Road.
Detailed design is expected to be completed by August 2024, after which tenders will be called for construction.
