The day encourages people to ask an important question, ‘are you ok?’ to check up on others’ mental health.
NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says it’s important that truckies, and those that work within the heavy vehicle industry check in with family, friends, loved ones and each other, particularly after long journeys on the road.
“For those working in and around trucks, there are certainly some unique challenges including tight deadlines, long hours, shift work and isolation,” he says.
“These obstacles can unfortunately have an impact on mental wellbeing.”
Petroccitto says mental health is a big issue within the heavy vehicle industry, and R U OK? Day encourages people to reach out for support and stay connected.
“Every person in the heavy vehicle industry can find value in learning the signs of someone who isn’t behaving as they normally would, listening, and encouraging action,” he says.
“All members at the NHVR, and all our industry, are encouraged to share a simple conversation to really make a difference.”
“R U OK? Day recognises that anyone can ask the question, and a genuine chat can make a difference when someone is struggling.”
“We can all play a role in looking out for one another and making mental wellbeing a normalised and prioritised part of the workplace.”
He says the NHVR’s commitment to mental health safety is also reflected in their mental health first aid training which is provided to NHVR officers.
Currently, 60 on-roads officers across Victoria and NSW have been trained, with more training planned for Queensland.
“This will take us to around 100 trained staff by the end of the year, and means our employees are empowered to understand, identify and support others who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis situation.”
The NHVR has also previously released regulatory advice providing guidance on mental health and wellbeing in the heavy vehicle industry, particularly relevant to employers.
