Commencing next week, this work is part of the Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative, which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on country roads.

Transport for NSW regional director Cassandra French says flexible safety barriers will be installed in the centre of the highway to redirect vehicles back into their lane to reduce the risk of them hitting oncoming vehicles or a roadside hazard.

“Flexible safety barriers can reduce the severity of high-risk crashes by up to 95 per cent so we expect they will go a long way to improving safety on the Hume Highway at Gundagai,” she says.

“Work will start on Monday 24 February to widen the shoulders and install new flexible safety barriers in the centre of the road for a 3.7-kilometre section north of the Sheahan Bridge and take about eight weeks to complete, weather permitting.”

Following this, work will start south of the bridge for a 3.8-kilometre section and take about 10 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Work will be carried out weekdays, Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, and on Saturdays between 8am and 1pm.

Temporary lane closures, traffic controls and reduced speed limits will be in place for the safety of workers and road users.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, follow the directions of signs and traffic control, and allow up to five minutes of extra travel time.
